red cross christchurch earthquake emergency grants

An independent commission was established in March to disburse emergency grants from the New Zealand Red Cross 2011 Earthquake Appeal to those affected by the Christchurch earthquake.

The most recent grant to be handed out was the Winter Assistance grant for under 5s. This assists households with children under 5 years of age who are living in significantly damaged homes caused by the September or February earthquakes, with their electricity bills. Recently, the Commission also announced the Winter Assistance Grant to help with electricity bills for people over 65 years living in significantly damaged homes and Relocated School Children grant to assist children attending their existing school but are commuting significant distances due to damage to homes.

WARNING: beware of fundraising scams

We have learnt of reports of a scam email circulating, supposedly from the Red Cross, which directs people to a fake phishing website where you are asked for credit card details. There could be a number of these fake emails and fake websites surfacing in coming days. The scam website has the same look and feel as the genuine Red Cross website. Authorities are closely monitoring these sites. Read more..
