New Zealand Red Cross supports humanitarian aid workers and international programmes in more than 15 countries. These programmes assist millions of the worlds most vulnerable people including victims of natural and other disasters, refugees and displaced people and those affected by socio-economic problems.

We support humanitarian aid workers and international programmes in the following countries:

Afghanistan

For the past 20 years Afghanistan has been a country ravaged by war and conflict. In recent years the country has made great strides with the ousting of the Taliban regime in 2002 and the appointment of a democratically elected president. The years of conflict have left behind destruction and vulnerable people. New Zealand Red Cross has one Health aid worker in Khandahar.

Pakistan

The ICRC began working the Pakistan in 1981 to assist victims of the conflict in Afghanistan. Its operations now focus on the situation in Pakistan and include visiting some groups of security detainees and seeking access to others; assisting victims of conflict and natural disasters; improving care of the war wounded and the disabled; promoting compliance with IHL among officials and military forces; fostering dialogue with Islamic scholars and the media on IHL-related issues, the conduct of hostilities and neutral and independent humanitarian action; and supporting the Pakistan Red Crescent Society in enhancing its emergency response capacity, particularly in areas near the Line of Control and the Afghan border.

Timor Leste

Timor Leste was born of conflict in 1999 when it won independence from Indonesia but violence and fighting resurfaced in 2006 resulting in thousands fleeing their homes and setting up in temporary camps. The unrest also disrupted much of the countrys infrastructure. New Zealand Red Cross has been supporting the Timor Leste Red Cross with finacial assistance and aidworkers for over 10 years.
