Anonymous donor gives new life to Indonesia earthquake appeal

An anonymous donor has more than doubled the public contribution to the Red Cross Indonesia earthquake appeal by donating $150,000, taking the total amount raised by the public to $232,000. The donation of $150,000 was made through an accounting firm in Christchurch, with a request that the supporter remain anonymous. Acting National President Penny Mason says that this is by far the largest public donation received by New Zealand Red Cross for the Indonesia earthquake. “This donation more than doubles the public contribution so far, and will make an enormous difference to the lives of those who have lost their homes, livelihoods and family members.”

Combined with government aid agency NZAID’s contribution of $500,000, New Zealand has now donated more than $732,000 to Red Cross relief efforts in Indonesia.

Mrs Mason says that New Zealanders have a reputation for being incredibly generous when it comes to responding to the plight of those affected by disaster or conflict.

“We are continually impressed by the willingness of New Zealanders to help others, whether it’s a food crisis in East Africa, or an earthquake in Indonesia. Their support will help the Red Cross to bring relief to 325,000 people affected by the earthquake for the next 12 months and longer.”

New Zealand Red Cross will also send logistics aid worker Greg Johns to Indonesia tomorrow.

Mr Johns, a logistics delegate from Whangarei, will join three other New Zealand Red Cross aid workers already working to bring relief to those affected by the earthquake.

Mrs Mason says the anonymous donation is particularly timely, as the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent has extended its appeal for Indonesia from NZ$15.5 million to $48.7 million.

The revised appeal will help the Indonesian Red Cross to provide ongoing medical care, food, drinking water, sanitation facilities and emergency shelter, as well as rehabilitation and recovery activities such as psychosocial support, livelihood support, hygiene promotion and disaster preparedness.

“Recovery doesn’t happen overnight, but recent major disasters, like the Pakistan earthquake, have taught us that the earlier we start planning for it, the sooner survivors are able to rebuild their communities and return to normal life,” Mrs Mason says.

New Zealanders can make a donation to the Indonesia earthquake appeal:

- by calling 0900 33 200 to make an automatic $20 donation; or

- an online donation.

New Zealand Red Cross will not deduct any administration costs from the donations.
