New Zealand Red Cross is investigating fraudulent phone calls by people claiming to be raising money for Red Cross. During the call, the fraudsters ask people for their home phone number, and say a donation to New Zealand Red Cross will appear on their next Telecom phone bill.
"We apologise for any confusion about these phone calls, which are in no way connected to New Zealand Red Cross," says Clare Cain, New Zealand Red Cross National Fundraising Manager. "New Zealand Red Cross is talking to Telecom, the police and other agencies to investigate the scam. "
New Zealand Red Cross engages with members of the public in a variety of ways to seek support and raise funds for our vital work. This includes using our website, sending emails and letters and phoning people. Anyone contacting the public on our behalf will be able to identify themselves. They will be able to give their name, role, location and contact details. Members of the public who are uncertain can check by phoning 0800 RED CROSS (0800 733 276).
"Kiwis have always responded extremely generously to our fundraising efforts, which support our programmes at home and overseas. We hope they will continue to do so. Anyone with queries about a call is welcome to phone me directly on 04 495 0135," says Ms Cain.
