The programme is very successful and popular with participants - but best of all it saves lives!

In September 2008, 10-year-old Shane Tuariki performed the Heimlich manoeuvre on five-year-old Joshua Tu'uu who was choking on a cracker during afternoon tea, while the supervising teacher was taking a phone call.

Only three days later, 10-year-old Larissa Miller, from the same school, performed the same manoeuvre on her three-year-old sister Olivia who had swallowed a marble while her Mum was busy cleaning. Both Shane and Larissa had attended an after-school People Savers first aid programme at their Naenae, Wellington school, provided by Red Cross. In June 2009, nine-year-old Cody Gelling performed the Heimlich manoeuvre on his three-year-old brother, Logan, who had swallowed a small key-ring and had run away, choking. Cody had attended a Red Cross Peoples Savers first aid course at his Lake Rotoiti School only days earlier. [Source: Nelson Mail, 16/6/09, Page 1, No choke with Cody to the rescue].
