Earthquakes happen. So do tornadoes, hurricanes, power outages, floods and bushfires. When an emergency occurs here in New Zealand the outcome may well depend on how well we respond.
New Zealand Red Cross have recruited, trained and equipped two new Emergency Management Teams in Auckland and Whangarei thanks to Telecom's community investment.
Telecom's active investment is a landmark event. Our new teams in Auckland and Whangarei means New Zealand Red Cross now provides effective emergency response coverage in all major population centres in New Zealand.
New Zealand Red Cross Emergency Management Teams are known as active members of their local communities - with good reason. When an emergency occurs our new Emergency Management Teams, supported by Telecom, are already equipped and prepared to swing into action. Our Emergency Management Teams provide food, shelter, relief supplies, welfare support and health related services to address basic human needs.
Partnership in our Emergency Management Teams places Telecom at the centre of kiwi communities. Our teams provide a presence at local events by providing support and disaster preparedness training in conjunction with local authorities.
Telecom is helping us build the capacity of local communities by increasing skills and equipping people to care for each other. Saving a life is the ultimate humanitarian act; the most wonderful gift we can offer anyone - family member, friend, neighbour or total stranger.
New Zealand Red Cross enhances community resilience through our Emergency Management Teams, by providing first aid training for adults and children and a range of other initiatives. Telecom and New Zealand Red Cross have been working together to help people affected by disasters and emergencies for many years.
Telecom have provided over $500,000 in support of our emergency appeals including vital assistance for our work Samoa and Haiti. Telecom also provided roaming mobile phones for the Red Cross to aid our disaster relief work in Samoa in 2009.
