emergency management When disaster strikes, New Zealand Red Cross works hard to mobilise its volunteers and provide assistance and support where and when required. New Zealand Red Cross works with the Ministry of Civil Defence and Emergency Management, other government agencies and Emergency Management Groups to ensure the skills and abilities of our staff and volunteers are put to use in helping those in need.

what we do

New Zealand Red Cross provides a number of key emergency management activities at a national and local level during times of disaster including

Disasters do not discriminate - they can happen at any time, anywhere and affect anyone.

New Zealand Red Cross has two types of Emergency Management teams. Welfare Teams are trained in basic emergency management skills, basic first aid and the skills necessary to support evacuees in a Welfare Centre. Response Teams have the same training as Welfare Teams, with additional training in advanced first aid, casualty handling and patient triage. Some Response Teams also have training in light rescue, storm and flood response, swift water response and rope rescue. Some teams also offer victim support for house fires, welfare support for rural firefighters and support for search and rescue and other police operations.

They also continue their regular programmes of assisting with first aid events, training and undertaking combined exercises to enhance their capability.

preparedness for emergencies

While it is comforting to know that assistance and support should be available should disaster strike, it may not be there immediately.

To be well prepared to face such situations, New Zealand Red Cross advises you to take steps now to help lessen the affect an emergency or disaster may have on you or your family.

To help survive a disaster, everyone should have an emergency plan, basic first aid skills and survival items such as food, water and medication to last a minimum of three days.
