One of the original organisers, Jenny Beckett, says the book fair has a long history and she enjoys coming back each year to volunteer. “Being a volunteer for the Book Fair gives me a lot of satisfaction in knowing ultimately we are receiving donations for Red Cross. As the sorters all know each other well, it is also a fun social time with a serious meaning behind it.”

Jenny was asked to volunteer in 1996. "We sorted books in an old chemist shop in Silverdale and held our first fair in the old Post Office, which is now the Sky City casino,” says Jenny.

Preparations for the book fair are a team effort, with a group of volunteers pitching in. “There are ten volunteers who help sort the books and lift heavy boxes. During the book fair set-up we have many friends who come to assist as well as volunteering during the book fair,” says Jenny.

Last year around 50,000 books were available for sale at the book fair. Jason Sebestien, Humanitarian Services Coordinator, says he expects the fair to raise around $50,000 this year for New Zealand Red Cross. Funds will go towards running Red Cross community and youth programmes in the Waikato.
