All book lovers in the Waikato will know about Red Cross’ annual book fair – it’s one of the biggest in the region, with thousands of books categorised by subject, and attracts readers from far and wide.

Over the years, Jenny and Lin, two of the original organisers, have sorted close to 1 million books kindly donated by the public. In its first year, the fair made a profit of $9,000. This year, volunteers hope they will raise $60,000.

“It’s a big job, but we are well organised. We have seven sorters who have known each other for years. We are fortunate to have two volunteers who help out each Monday with lifting boxes,” says Jenny Beckett, long-standing volunteer.

Each year, between 40,000 to 50,000 books pass through the hands of our volunteers. Books are collected all year round and are carefully categorised by genre and put into alphabetical order. Jenny looks forward to Mondays when she meets the rest of the volunteers. “We have a lot of fun. We sort books and catch up on each other’s news. We multi-task very well!” says Jenny.

Funds raised from the Hamilton book fair will support New Zealand Red Cross programmes both in New Zealand and overseas.
