Role description
International delegates go overseas to save lives, relieve suffering, and maintain human dignity on the front line in the aftermath of disasters, conflict, and complex emergencies. Assignments can range from several weeks or months, and at times for 12 months.
We’re currently recruiting for the following skill sets:
- planning, monitoring, and evaluation
- protection, gender, and inclusion
- climate change
- operations management
- finance
- security, and
- communications.
International delegates are covered by fixed-term contracts when they go overseas.
Our fixed term contracts cover:
- salary
- per diem
- travel and accommodation
- support before and after deployment
- medical clearance, and
- insurance.
Applications close on Friday 5 April at 5pm.
Your tasks
- Use your skills in response to a disaster, event, or to build response capacity and resilience in the Pacific or elsewhere overseas.
- Deploy for at least two weeks each year, preferably more if available.
Volunteer requirements and training
- You need to have at least three years of experience in one or more of the specialisations we're recruiting for.
- You need to be a New Zealand Citizen have a Permanent Resident Visa. You also need to be in good health.
- You need to provide a CV and cover letter, you'll be able to do this once you've submitted your application.
- You must be able to meet our impartiality, neutrality, and independence requirements.
Find out more about our Fundamental Principles - You need to be mature in your judgement, adaptable, and be able to use your initiative. Delegates live and work as a team, so you’ll need to have well-developed skills in communication, diplomacy, and cultural sensitivity.
- Computer skills are necessary, especially using Microsoft Word and Excel.
- Ability to speak another language is beneficial, especially Spanish, French, Arabic, or a Pacific language.
- To prepare you for deployment, you need to complete a two-week residential course from 20 to 31 May, as well as other online courses. For the residential course your time is voluntary, and we cover your costs.
Health, safety, and wellbeing
- Make sure your actions (or lack of actions) don’t harm your health, safety and wellbeing, or harm anyone else.
- Take part in a health, safety, and wellbeing induction, training, programmes, and activities.
- Follow all instructions given to you about health, safety, and wellbeing.
- Follow all Red Cross health, safety, and wellbeing policies, standards, and procedures.
- Make sure you have the right training for any activities you are doing.
- Use personal protective equipment (PPE) for any work activities that may need it to stay safe.
- If you spot a hazard, or you are involved in an incident or near miss, report this straight away.

- Two work-related referees
- NZ permanent residency or citizenship
