Because of you, we will be prepared when the next emergency threatens a community in New Zealand. Generous people like you are the reason we can be there when it matters most.

We know it’s not a question of if, but when the next disaster will strike. Your donation will help ensure that our trucks are full of the essentials like stretchers, blankets and first aid kits.

Your gift will also make sure that our teams are fully trained, equipped and ready to support people in their darkest moments.

Whether it’s a cyclone, an earthquake or flood that threatens our communities next, today you have made sure that, together, we will stand with those affected when they need us most.

The next disaster could strike tomorrow – will we be ready?

When disaster strikes, people’s lives can be turned upside down in an instant. In a matter of hours, homes can be lost, communities cut off, and families left facing the unimaginable. We know from events like Cyclone Gabrielle and the 2011 Christchurch earthquake, that being prepared not only matters – it saves lives.

It’s hard to imagine it will ever happen to you – until it does. Cyclone Gabrielle showed just how quickly life can change. Mercia Paaymans thought they had avoided the worst – until floodwaters engulfed her Hawke’s Bay home and everything was covered in thick mud. The sight of a Red Cross team coming up her drive gave Mercia a much-needed sense of relief and hope.

“It felt like someone actually cared, that someone gave a damn.”

When disaster strikes, Red Cross Disaster Welfare and Support Teams (DWST) are ready to offer vital practical and emotional support to communities in need.

Kia ora, I’m Francis Hubbard a volunteer in the New Zealand Red Cross Disaster Welfare Support Team in Auckland.

When you support the Red Cross Annual Appeal, you are helping to ensure that up and down the country our Red Cross people are ready to respond in the event of emergencies. Because when disasters strike, every second counts.

Thanks to your generosity, we help communities build resilience by having over 20 dedicated and trained teams, who are on call around the clock.

From setting up evacuation centres, to offering a warm blanket and emotional support, our Emergency Management teams bring hope to people in their darkest moments and in their time of need.

They provide practical help and a sense of safety to communities affected by emergencies.

Together, with your support, we can help communities here in Aotearoa New Zealand be prepared. Thank you.

In this video, Francis, DWST deputy team leader, explains how donations help prepare our teams to help people during emergencies across Aotearoa – from floods and cyclones to earthquakes, fires and tornadoes.

Severe weather events are becoming more frequent and more intense. We always need to be ready to help communities when they need us most while continuing to support those who rely on our humanitarian programmes every day.

New Zealand Red Cross has 20 Disaster Welfare and Support Teams on call across the country. From setting up evacuation centres, to offering a warm blanket and emotional support, our teams bring hope to people in their darkest moments and time of need.

But we cannot do this without your support.

This Annual Appeal is about readiness – making sure we are there when the next disaster strikes, while continuing to support the people who rely on our humanitarian programmes every day. Your donation today helps ensure our teams are trained, our trucks are stocked, and help arrives when it matters most.

What if we weren’t ready?

With your help, we won’t have to find out.

Finally, don’t forget that when you make a donation of over $5.00, you could claim 33.33% back from IRD!
