Pronoun use in email signatures
We know that part of showing our support to the Rainbow community is getting pronouns and names right.
Pronouns are words used to refer to people. We all have pronouns (for example: she/her, he/him, or they/them). Normalising the inclusion of pronouns is encouraged and celebrated at New Zealand Red Cross. For members of the LGBTQIA+ community, especially those who are transgender, gender non conforming and gender diverse – being referred to by the correct name and pronouns is essential.
A quick and easy way to be a Rainbow ally and normalise the use of pronouns is to include them in your email signature.
If you are experiencing discrimination or negativity for using your pronouns in your workplace, please contact your team leader or People & Capability. There are some additional resources that may help:
- New Zealand Red Cross Rainbow Network. To get in contact, email: rainbow.network@redcross.org.nz
- WorkSafe’s resource page on bullying
- Employee Assistance Programme (EAP)
- Gender Minorities Aotearoa
