Sorting event volunteer

Role description
We're holding several sorting events on 21, 23, 25 and 30 October, as well as 1, 4, 6 and 8 November to help our teams process donated goods getting them ready for sale our Red Cross Shops. As a volunteer, you'll be sorting and preparing donated clothing for sale, as part of a team.
Funds raised in our shops go to supporting communities where the need is greatest in Aotearoa New Zealand and overseas. You'll also be helping give pre-loved clothing a new lease of life, extending the life of quality items and supporting sustainable shopping.
Your tasks
Your volunteer role will include:
- Processing donated goods ready for sale: sorting donations into saleable, unsaleable and recyclable items, with guidance provided.
- Weighing and recording of saleable, unsalable and recyclable.
- Hanging and steaming items.
- Preparing items for pricing (attaching tickets).
Location
There are nine locations across the motu:
- four in Auckland
- two in Christchurch, and
- two in Wellington.
Volunteer requirements and training
- We need friendly people who take initiative and enjoy working in a team
- Please wear flat, comfortable, closed-in shoes as tasks involve standing or moving for long periods of time.
- Bring water.
- Gloves will be provided.
- Some lifting of bulky items may be required. If you have accessibility needs, please let us know.
- Tea, coffee and biscuits will be provided.
- Please bring ID when checking in to your first shift.
Health, Safety and Wellbeing (HSW)
- Make sure your actions (or lack of actions) don’t harm your health, safety and wellbeing, or harm anyone else,
- Take part in a HSW induction, training, programmes and activities,
- Follow all instructions given to you about health, safety and wellbeing,
- Follow all NZRC HSW policies, standards and procedures about health, safety and wellbeing,
- Make sure you have the right training for any activities you are doing,
- Use personal protective equipment (PPE) for any work activities that may need it to stay safe,
- If you spot a hazard, or you are involved in an incident or near miss, report this straight away,
- Take care with manual handling tasks.
