Many people in Edgecumbe were unprepared when, on 6 April 2017, the Rangitaiki River breached a stopbank, which caused widespread flooding across the whole town. One of these residents was Vicky Richards, who lost her home that day.
Kere and her children had just moved into their house when the wild weather hit Napier in November 2020. Situated at the top of Bluff Hill, they were relatively safe from the threats of flooding – but this did not leave them any less vulnerable to the heavy downpour’s impact. Fortunately, they were surrounded by good and ready neighbours.
This Good and Ready Week, 12 – 16 October, New Zealand Red Cross has teamed up with the Hurricanes to launch the Good and Ready Photo Challenge.
During Good and Ready week from 14 to 20 October, Meals on Wheels was adapted to help Hamiltonians prepare for future disasters: ‘Tips on Wheels’ were delivered to Hamilton’s elderly community along with their meals.
