They’ve been doing deliveries together ever since, servicing Otahuhu and Mt Wellington as part of the Pisces team. While many Meals on Wheels drivers can only commit to one day a week, Soni’s often on the road four days a week, delivering up to 13-14 meals on his run.

“If they’re short of drivers, Moana only has to ring me. We never say no – I don’t know the word,” says Soni.

Winnie brings up a recent situation where they’d just come back from their run and were sitting down for lunch when Moana called and said somebody hadn’t picked up the meals. Before Winnie could stop him, Soni was out the door again.

It’s easy to see why Soni’s become a bit of a legend on his run. He even has a signature door knock so recipients know exactly who’s there to meet them. As Winnie puts it “Everybody knows him” but the humble pair just see what they do as providing an essential service.

They really enjoy seeing the people and get some good laughs along the way. Legends like Soni and Winnie not only deliver a hot meal to Kiwis every day, but also provide a social connection for many people who might not otherwise see a smiling face at the door. Meals on Wheels is a great way to give back to your community.
