Standing on the side of humanity this World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day
8 May 2026
On World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day, we recognise the work of millions of people around the world supporting communities in times of crisis.
This year’s theme, United In humanity, recognises the role of Members, volunteers and employees who provide support in often difficult and challenging conditions. The Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement is a global humanitarian network, working in more than 190 countries to support people affected by conflict, disasters and other emergencies.
Earlier this year, New Zealand Red Cross Secretary General Sarah Stuart-Black spoke with Régis Savioz, Regional Director for Asia Pacific at the International Committee of the Red Cross, about the growing scale of humanitarian need and the importance of working together across the Movement.
Their discussion reflected on the increasing number of conflicts globally, the growing humanitarian impact of crises, and the role of international humanitarian law in limiting suffering during conflict.
As Régis noted during the discussion, the phrase “never again” was intended to represent a global commitment to reducing suffering in war and protecting humanity, even in the most challenging situations.
From conflict zones to communities impacted by disasters, Red Cross and Red Crescent teams continue to support people in need, advocate for humanity, and help reconnect families separated by crisis and conflict.
As we mark this day, we thank our New Zealand Red Cross people — and all those people in the Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement around the world who continue to remain united in humanity.
