Refugee Support Electrical Appliance Tester

Role description
Electrical appliance tester volunteers make sure that donated appliances are electrically safe before they are included in homeware packs for refugee background families and individuals.
You'll be testing and tagging donated household appliances, making sure that low voltage single phase and polyphase electrical equipment is electrically safe. These are then provided to former refugee clients of our Pathways to Settlement service, which we provide in eight locations across the motu.
Your tasks
- Test and tag donated electrical appliances
- Communicate regularly with our settlement team
Location
At a Red Cross site in one of eight settlement locations across the motu.
Volunteer requirements and training
Volunteers must have the knowledge and skills to undertake testing and tagging of electrical equipment. You do not need to be a registered electrical worker, however you must be able to understand the WorkSafe standards that are in place.
Health, safety and wellbeing (HSW)
We all have a responsibility for our own and others’ Health, Safety and Wellbeing (HSW) when undertaking activities on behalf of New Zealand Red Cross. Therefore, it is important you:
- take reasonable care of your own health and safety, and do not adversely affect the HSW of others
- complete health, safety and wellbeing induction, training, programmes and activities – as directed
- follow all reasonable instructions given to you relating to HSW
- cooperate and comply with New Zealand Red Cross policies, standards and procedures related to health, safety, and wellbeing
- use personal protective equipment (PPE) if required, to undertake any work activity
- report any hazards you identify and/or any involvement in an incident or near miss straight away to your people leader
- know what to do in an emergency – for example, how to escape during a fire or what to do if an earthquake occurs
- tell someone in charge if you have any health and safety concerns or worried about someone else’s health and safety.
