Role description

Youth Settlement volunteers assist the Settlement Youth Worker in running events to support refugee background young people in their settlement journey.

Volunteers receive ongoing support from New Zealand Red Cross settlement teams.

Your tasks

  • Provide supervision for children and young people during events
  • Help create a welcoming and inclusive space for refugee-background young people through community-based activities
  • Support positive development of young people to advocate for themselves, their whānau, community and world

Location

In one of eight settlement locations across the motu. Locations are Invercargill, Dunedin, Palmerston North, Wellington, Nelson, Levin, Masterton and Blenheim.

Volunteer requirements and training

All volunteers receive training to help them feel confident and prepared in the role. Training covers the refugee journey, intercultural practice, the role of the volunteer and more. Training is held throughout the year. There is more information about vacancies and training times at the top of this page when filtered by location. 

We are looking for people with:

  • Passion to develop and support young people in their journey
  • Openness to working with people from refugee backgrounds
  • Some understanding or experience of youth work (desirable, but not required)
  • Driver’s licence (desirable, but not required)

Youth Settlement Volunteers commit to support at least two events a term for two terms or more. Volunteers provide a fun and safe environment for refugee background young people. Activities and events take place mainly during the school terms, and occasionally during school holidays and weekend, in Red Cross buildings or out in the community. 

Health, safety & wellbeing (HSW)

  • Make sure your actions (or lack of actions) don’t harm your health, safety and wellbeing, or harm anyone else.
  • Take part in a HSW induction, training, programmes and activities.
  • Follow all instructions given to you about health, safety and wellbeing.
  • Follow all our NZRC HSW policies, standards and procedures about health, safety and wellbeing.
  • Make sure you have the right training for any activities you are doing.
  • Use personal protective equipment (PPE) for any work activities that may need it to stay safe.
  • If you spot a hazard, or you are involved in an incident or near miss, report this straight away.
