Today New Zealand Red Cross is launching a Pacific Nations COVID-19 Appeal to support our Pacific neighbours as they battle with the devastating impact of COVID-19.
Over the past few months, we have seen lives and communities across the Pacific overwhelmed by the rapid increase in COVID-19 cases.
New Zealand Red Cross General Manager for International Programmes, Vivienne Euini, says,
“Securing funds in this way enables the Red Cross to flex and respond to different needs as they present themselves across the Pacific.”
New Zealand Red Cross has been working with the New Zealand and Fijian Governments, and the Fiji National Society on the ground said Ms Euini.
“We have assessed how we can best support a response to meet the needs created by the significant impact of COVID-19. It is likely some of the funds raised will go to support the work of Red Cross delegates in Fiji, as well as our other Pacific nation neighbours.”
Red Cross delegates are technical or medical specialists like nurses, doctors, operations staff that can support the response effort in Fiji.
Kiwis can be assured that 100% of donations given will be used to support the essential work of Red Cross Societies across the Pacific, ensuring that funds will go to where the need is greatest.
This support may include delivering lifesaving medical supplies to hospitals and health clinics across the Pacific, providing pre-hospital medical care to remote Pacific Island communities and increasing awareness and access to desperately needed COVID-19 vaccinations.
It is important to remember that by making a cash donation you are not only supporting those directly impacted by COVID-19 but are also aiding wider community recovery by restoring livelihoods and local economic activity.
New Zealand Red Cross has a long history of working closely with Red Cross National Societies in the Pacific through capacity building, knowledge sharing, pre-positioning of relief items and disaster response activities.

The Red Cross’ mission is to improve the lives of vulnerable people by mobilising the power of humanity and enhancing community resilience. The Red Cross Fundamental Principles guide all we do, whether we're helping people in New Zealand communities or providing urgent relief in an international disaster.
These seven principles are our lifeline, connecting us with the Red Cross Red Crescent Movement and the 190 National Societies throughout the world.
Here are some of the ways New Zealand Red Cross works in Aotearoa New Zealand.
Q: Why is this appeal for the Pacific, and not Fiji where it is needed right now?
A: All Pacific nations are potentially at risk. It is important New Zealand Red Cross has the ability to allocate funds to where the greatest need is now and in the future. It is likely some of the funds raised will be allocated to a response in Fiji.
Q: What has New Zealand Red Cross been doing in Fiji to support the people there?
A: New Zealand Red Cross has been actively supporting Fiji Red Cross’s response to the pandemic by meeting hygiene needs, and providing COVID-19 safe kits including Personal Protective Equipment to vulnerable communities.
Q: How much of the funds raised will go to support those in the Pacific suffering from the impact of COVID-19?
A: 100% of the funds raised in this Special Pacific Nation COVID-19 Appeal will be used to respond to needs of those most impacted.
Q: What will the funds be used for?
A: With the support of the International Federation of the Red Cross Red Crescent (IFRC), local Red Cross societies across the Pacific are already mobilised and supporting those most in need. For example, in Fiji 232 representatives have already been trained to support the vaccine registration process.
Funds raised from this appeal will be used across the Pacific to support those most in need. This might take the form of:
1. Delivering lifesaving medical supplies to hospitals and health clinics across the Pacific
2. Increasing awareness and access to desperately needed COVID-19 vaccinations
3. Providing pre-hospital medical care to remote Pacific Island communities
Q: How are the funds being administered?
A: New Zealand Red Cross is responsible for ensuring that funds are managed well. We will be working closely with the IFRC and the different Pacific based Red Cross Societies to ensure that funds are used wisely and effectively.
Q: Can people donate goods and how will they get there?
A: To make a lasting difference in communities, New Zealand Red Cross ask people to make a monetary gift instead of giving physical goods. An effective way to aid recovery is by restoring livelihoods and local economic activity. Where Red Cross can, we source emergency relief goods locally. Importing items can damage local retailers and affect market prices, especially in poorer communities.
Communities recover faster when we source goods locally and use internationally recognised relief items. Therefore, we ask for cash instead of goods.
Cash is also easier to collect, transfer, distribute and account for.
