Community Transport
Ikiiki Hapori
Here to there, with care. Our Community Transport volunteer drivers help people all around New Zealand who, for medical, mobility or financial reasons, find it difficult to get to appointments. Red Cross provides this service for free.
Please note that this service is coming to an end. The service will continue to run in several regions as we transition, with all regional services concluding by 2023. You can check what is happening in your area by calling 0800 733 276.
How it works
Our Community Transport service takes people from their homes to community appointments - for instance, to their doctor, hospital outpatient clinic, medical specialist or medical centre. Our drivers are trained in first aid and provide assistance to and from the vehicle. So you know you're in good hands!
In some areas you may need a referral from your health professional.
Accessing Community Transport
If you or a friend or family member have trouble attending an appointment without assistance or for financial reasons, call your local Red Cross service centre or ring 0800 733 276 and ask about Community Transport in your area. They will advise whether you need a referral from a health professional.
If you are a health professional and wish to inquire about Community Transport for a client, please call us on 0800 733 276.
How to book
To ensure a vehicle and driver are available, it's best to book at least 24 hours before your appointment. You can book by calling your Red Cross service centre or by ringing 0800 733 276. When you book, please advise what time you expect your appointment to end so that we can be there to take you back home.
Not an emergency service
Our Community Transport service is not an emergency or ambulance service. If you need an ambulance or have a medical emergency, always dial 111.
