Wellington, New Zealand – 12 October 2020
The past year has been tough, hasn’t it? Aotearoa New Zealand has recently faced floods, fires, a volcanic eruption and now a global pandemic – and we know more disasters and emergencies will continue to happen. We all need to be prepared for whatever is around the corner.
That’s why this Good and Ready Week, 12 – 16 October, New Zealand Red Cross has teamed up with the Hurricanes to launch the Good and Ready Photo Challenge. The aim of this challenge is to encourage Kiwis to take action to get better prepared for an emergency.
“Throughout the week, we want people across Aotearoa New Zealand to get good and ready for a disaster,” says Angela Sutherland, New Zealand Red Cross’ General Manager Disaster Risk Management.
“We also want to remind people that being prepared isn’t only about storing water, tinned food and other essential items – it is also about being connected with those around you. In a disaster, most people are helped first by their neighbours. People share food, shelter, and information, and they lend a helping hand in their communities to support each other to get through tough times. Therefore, planning alongside members of your community, neighbourhood and family can make a world of difference.”
To join the Good and Ready Photo Challenge, we are asking people to take and share photos of themselves getting better prepared for a disaster. These photos could include simple actions like connecting with neighbours, storing supplies or making an emergency plan. There are lots more ideas at redcross.org.nz/goodandready.
To go in the draw for prizes, people need to share their three best photos either on their social media page, tagging Red Cross (@NewZealandRedCross on Facebook and @NZRedCross on Instagram), or by emailing the photos to firstname.lastname@example.org.
Eligible participants will go in the draw to win an iPhone, kindly donated by our partner New Zealand Post, which could help you stay connected with your whānau and wider community following any kind of disaster or emergency.
New Zealand Post is one of the longest-running partners of New Zealand Red Cross, generously supporting our emergency response and preparedness activities since 2011. This year, to help Kiwis get better prepared for emergencies, New Zealand Post has provided additional funding to produce a range of educational resources to help boost awareness and engagement with the Good and Ready public awareness campaign.
The winning photos will be chosen in collaboration with the Hurricanes. Winning photos will also be shared on Red Cross social media channels, in celebration of their awesomeness!
