Role description

Our Young Humanitarians programme helps support rangatahi | young people to take humanitarian action in their communities. Young Humanitarians | Karawhiua! creates spaces for young people to voice their concerns for humanitarian issues like climate change, nuclear war and inclusion, and be part of the solutions.

By volunteering as a Young Humanitarians Support Volunteer, you could be supporting facilitators run workshops on humanitarian issues like climate change. You could also be making possible community-based activities like putting together welcome packs for former refugees or streamside planting. You will report to our Area Support Team, who will guide you through your volunteering journey.

Your tasks

  • Participant sign-in/sign-out.
  • Workshop set-up/pack down.
  • Supporting young people in connecting humanitarian messages with community-based action.
  • Child protection and safety.

Volunteer requirements and training

We need friendly people who care about supporting young people to take their and passions ideas into the community. Experience is volunteering and community leadership are always bonuses. Volunteering as a Young Humanitarians Support Volunteer is a great way to foster the capabilities for young people to improve the lives of those around them.

When you apply, you’ll need to provide the details of two referees that we can contact. For example, they could be your employer, professor, friend, or someone who knows you well. 

Your referees can’t be related to you or part of your extended family, nor be your partner or spouse, nor live at the same address as you. 

Health, Safety and Wellbeing

•    Make sure your actions (or lack of actions) don’t harm your health, safety and wellbeing, or harm anyone else
•    Take part in a HSW induction, training, programmes and activities
•    Follow all instructions given to you about health, safety and wellbeing
•    Follow all NZRC HSW policies, standards and procedures about health, safety and wellbeing
•    Make sure you have the right training for any activities you are doing
•    Use personal protective equipment (PPE) for any work activities that may need it to stay safe
•    If you spot a hazard, or you are involved in an incident or near miss, report this straight away
